Travel Guide

Getting to the Caribbean from Chicago

A plain-English guide to flying Chicago → the Caribbean. Which airport to use, which airlines run direct, how long you are actually in the air, what documents you need, and where Ukrainian travelers should double-check the rules before booking.

Chicago is one of the best-connected US cities for Caribbean travel. Between O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW), you have non-stop service to several of the region’s most popular all-inclusive destinations, plus one-stop connections through every major Sun Belt hub. For a family planning a week on the beach, that means you rarely need to waste a vacation day on a bad itinerary.

The Ministry of Lazy team books Caribbean vacations from Chicago every week, and we wrote these guides from the customer-service inbox outward: the questions we answer the most, the gotchas we see people hit, and the small decisions that save real money and real hassle. There is a page for each destination (Cancun, Punta Cana, Jamaica and Aruba) with flight details, airport transfer tips, time zones and a dedicated section for travelers on Ukrainian passports. Start with the overview below and drill into the destination that matches your dates and budget.

Quick rule of thumb: if you are flying in peak winter (December through April), book 3 to 5 months out. If you are flexible with dates, May, June and early November are our favorite “shoulder” windows — cheaper, quieter, and the weather is usually still excellent. Hurricane season (June through October) has the deepest discounts but you should book with a package and travel insurance so you are protected if the weather turns.

Flying from Chicago

O’Hare or Midway?

Both airports serve the Caribbean, but they are very different experiences. Here is how we choose between them for our clients.

ORD

O’Hare International

Most options

The default for Caribbean travel from Chicago. United and American both hub here, which means more daily departures, more aircraft, and more rebooking options when weather hits.

  • Year-round direct to Cancun and Montego Bay
  • Seasonal direct to Punta Cana and Aruba
  • Best hub for connecting flights via MIA, CLT, ATL, IAH
  • Global Entry / TSA PreCheck available in all terminals

Downside: bigger, slower on a bad day, and parking is more expensive. Leave earlier than you think you need to, especially in winter.

MDW

Midway International

Southwest country

Small, fast, and dominated by Southwest Airlines. When Southwest runs a seasonal non-stop to your destination, Midway is usually the easiest way to start a Caribbean trip from the South Side or western suburbs.

  • Seasonal direct to Cancun and Montego Bay on Southwest
  • Two free checked bags on Southwest — huge for family trips
  • Much faster walk from curb to gate than ORD
  • Orange Line CTA straight to downtown

Downside: limited international options outside of Southwest. If your dates don’t line up with a Southwest non-stop, ORD is almost always the better answer.

Documents & Visas

What you need to bring

Caribbean travel from the US is surprisingly painless paperwork-wise, but the small details matter. Here is the universal checklist, then the destination-specific requirements.

Required

Valid passport

Every Caribbean destination we book requires a passport book (not a card). We recommend at least 6 months of validity beyond your return date. If yours is close, renew before booking.

Usually required

Online arrival form

Mexico issues an FMM on arrival; Jamaica requires the C5 Immigration & Customs Form; Aruba requires the ED Card within 72 hours of arrival; the DR requires a tourist card (usually bundled into your ticket).

Highly recommended

Travel insurance

A basic plan is about 4–7% of trip cost and covers cancellation, medical, lost bags and delays. Essential during hurricane season (June–November) and for anyone traveling with kids.

Ukrainian Travelers

Traveling on a Ukrainian passport? Read this first.

All four of our Caribbean destinations (Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Aruba) generally allow Ukrainian passport holders to enter as tourists without a traditional visa. Your US immigration status (TPS, parole, visa, EAD) is independent from entering these countries — but you do need that status document to re-enter the US. Each destination page has a dedicated Ukrainian travelers section with the exact checklist.

Entry requirements can and do change. Always verify with the destination’s consulate in Chicago before you book a non-refundable trip. When in doubt, call us — Oksana Korol has walked dozens of Ukrainian families through this.

When to Book

Best time to lock it in

Peak

Dec – Apr

Best weather, highest prices. Book 3–5 months ahead. Christmas / New Year / spring break sells out early.

Sweet spot

May + Nov

Our favorite windows. Still great weather, smaller crowds, 20–30% cheaper. Book 6–10 weeks ahead.

Hot

Jun – Aug

Hot and humid but kids are out of school. Watch for hurricane risk starting August. Insurance is a must.

Gamble

Sep – Oct

Deepest discounts of the year. Real hurricane risk. Only book with a flexible package and travel insurance.

FAQ

Caribbean travel from Chicago — FAQ

Can I fly direct from Chicago to the Caribbean?

Yes, for most destinations. Cancun and Montego Bay (Jamaica) have year-round direct service from both O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW). Punta Cana and Aruba have seasonal non-stop service from ORD — usually peak winter — and require a connection the rest of the year.

Should I fly out of O'Hare (ORD) or Midway (MDW)?

O'Hare has more carriers, more daily flights, and more international options (United, American, Aeromexico, Volaris, Delta connections). Midway is mostly Southwest, which offers strong non-stop Caribbean service on seasonal schedules — especially to Cancun and Montego Bay. If your dates line up with a Southwest direct flight, Midway is usually cheaper, simpler and faster to get through. Otherwise, ORD gives you options.

Do I need a passport to fly from Chicago to the Caribbean?

Yes. Every Caribbean destination we book — Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Aruba — requires a valid passport for US residents. We recommend a passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond your return date. A passport card is not sufficient for air travel.

Do I need a visa for Caribbean vacations from Chicago?

US citizens and most US residents do not need a visa for tourist stays in Cancun, Punta Cana, Jamaica or Aruba. Some destinations require a free or low-cost online form: Mexico issues an FMM on arrival, Jamaica requires the online C5 Immigration & Customs Form, and Aruba requires the ED Card within 72 hours of arrival. Punta Cana requires a tourist card, usually bundled into your ticket or bought online for about $10 USD.

I have a Ukrainian passport — can I still travel to the Caribbean?

Yes. All four of our destinations (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Aruba) allow Ukrainian passport holders to enter as tourists without a traditional visa in most cases. Your US immigration status (TPS, parole, visa, EAD) is independent from entering these countries — but you do need that status document to come back to the US. Each destination page has a dedicated Ukrainian travelers section with the exact document checklist.

How far in advance should I book my Caribbean flight?

For peak season (December–April, spring break, Christmas/New Year) book 3–5 months in advance for the best combination of price and direct-flight availability. Summer and fall travel can often be booked 6–10 weeks out without much penalty. We track price trends daily — ping Oksana and she will tell you whether it is a good time to pull the trigger on your specific dates.

What if my flight gets delayed or cancelled?

Because we book the flights and the hotel together as a package, you have more protection than if you DIY'd it. If your flight is delayed past the first-night hotel check-in, the tour operator re-routes you or covers the first night. If a hurricane cancels the trip outright, you get a refund or a free re-book. This is one of the main reasons packages are worth it for Caribbean travel in particular.

Is travel insurance worth it for a Caribbean trip?

For all-inclusive vacations from Chicago, yes — and it is cheap. A basic plan runs about 4–7% of your total trip cost and covers trip cancellation, medical, lost luggage and delays. We strongly recommend it for any trip during hurricane season (June–November) or for families where one sick kid can derail the whole plan. We can quote it alongside your package.
